Thinking outside the box

Ok.. I finally got some sort of feedback on how much a 60 - 75ft Caravel would cost; ~$10,000 per FOOT. All kinds of time.. 6 - 10 experienced shipwrights..

WAY TOO MUCH to deal with!

So, a new decision! I am designing my own ship, with my own dimensions, and I will build it myself with the help of 1 shipwright, family, and friends. I found a lumber supplier online for hardwood with decent prices that I can order the wood from. Now I just need to find a place to order the rigging, sails, and other essentials from. I also need to find a shipwright who would be willing to help me build my ship at a reasonable price.

When you really want something and money gets in the way.. you gotta start thinking OUTSIDE THE BOX! I will find a way to make this work! I am not giving up on this dream! I know that I could spark the dreams of so many others if I can just get my own dream out on the ocean waters~

So I'm not going to stop pushing forward even when I finally do get out there~

Plans must be fluid..

From where I'm sitting right now, building the exact ship I wish to have is going to be a LOT tougher than I would have liked to have believed when I started this project. A lot more expensive as well. I'm certain I will be happy with any good, strong ship I am able to build myself so long as it is 60 - 75 ft in length, has two masts (a taller main mast forward and a shorter mizzen behind), and is fully wind/solar powered. I do not want any kind of fossil fuel involvement on my ship anywhere.

The galley kitchen will be electric and powered by solar and wind turbines. All lighting and other power needing equipment will be powered by wind & solar as well. I want ALL green & naturally renewable sources of energy on my ship! That way I am not dependent on ANYONE for my power! Fresh water will be provided by the rain in special collection barrels around the deck of the ship and if we need more we will pull in to purchase/trade for more.

I want a hull that is wide and deep. I would love to have two floors inside my ships hull; one for the galley and crew, one for storage. I want the captain's quarters to be at the rear of the ship built on the deck itself, like the ships of old. The renaissance ships were so beautiful, I just wish to have a ship like that.

I will keep searching. I am NOT giving up! I want to combine the beauty & elegance of old with the experience & technology of today. If I have to design a whole new kind of ship, I will do it! But I WILL have my ship, I will build it with my own two hands with the help of others (including professionals), & I will make my dreams come true! Because I know I can do it if I really want to. I have done everything else I've set out to do. Why should this be any different?

I WILL FIND A WAY!

Dream Ship....

Sunny Freedom.....

That is the name I have chosen for my ship. For me this is what she will be. Absolute, pure freedom filling my life with pure sunshine~^^

But I want to use my ship to spread that sunshine. I want to share her with my crew, with passengers, and with children all over the world. As I mentioned before, I will offer cruises to passengers as part of my business. But I've recently decided to expand what I offer to include 2 week summer camps for children.

Every summer we will be in a different location in the world and I will open my ship up to 20 children for a 2 week summer camp called Dream Ship. For two weeks the children will learn all there is to know about sailing, navigation, and even more. I will offer craft classes, cooking classes, and inspiration classes. I want to fill the children's hearts with dreams and hope! Hence the name Dream Ship for the camp.. but that's not all.

Some of those children may not have to pay a single penny to participate~

I want to open the camp to ALL children! Whether they are the only child of rich parents or a child living in a poor orphanage. ALL children have the right to dream and deserve to be empowered for a brighter future. So, those children whose parents are more well to do, I will charge a single flat rate for the two weeks. I will then offer a reduced price for families of low income who can apply for the lower rate quite easily by showing me their pay stub for the previous 3 months. Lastly, I will personally chose from open applications children to allow on board for free. Applications I will hand out to orphanages in the local area where I have decided to offer the camp for that summer.

I will post a schedule online as to where I will be that summer a few months ahead of time so people can prepare for our arrival...

All children will be given a uniform and none of their parent's financial information will be shared with the other children. I will have the parents all sign that they will not speak to the children or other parents how much they paid for the camp so that no one will know the difference. Every child will be treated fairly, no matter what price they paid to get on board. They will all work the same and do the same chores.

We will have cameras on board to record the entire summer camp for parents and, if possible, stream it over the web. Depending on how popular the camp is, we may offer more than one camp per summer. I haven't come up with a cost quite yet, but I will try to find something that would be affordable to all. This will be just one of the children's programs that I will run from the ship. The other program will be a charity, which I will right about a little later.

I've decided~^^

I was trying to decide between buying a boat and fixing it up, or building my own. Well, I've decided I'm going to build my own. I really wish to have a Caravel style ship and I wouldn't be satisfied with anything else. I also wish to take the time to build my ship myself and feel that buying any other boat in the meanwhile, just to get out on the ocean faster, would simply be a waste of my money and time when I could simply take that money and immediately invest it into the ship I want.

It'll delay my departure a bit, but I feel it is far more worth my trouble to take my time in doing this and having the ship I truly desire. I have a place to build already. So all I need now is the money to buy the wood. I want to build her of White Ash and wish for her to be approximately 60 - 75ft long with 2 masts, a square-rig on the main mast and a lanteen on the mizzen. Such a ship will require a larger crew, but seeing as I've found my first mate already.. I feel I'll be more than able to find the right number of crew mates before I'm ready to set sail.

I hope to have a permanent crew of at least 8 people (including myself) who will stick with me throughout our entire voyage~^^ Nothing would make me happier than having a group of nakama that I can always depend on to have my back in this. But that doesn't mean that I'm unwilling to take on temp crews either. The more, the merrier! I just want to have a solid crew as a base to build on so that there will be reliable crew members to show the temps the ropes.

Now to see if I can get my hands on a set of Caravel blueprints.... (-^_^-) v

2yrs & still strong~^^

February 23rd.... 2010..........
the day that forever changed my life.........................

Today marks my 2 yr anniversary since my life was forever changed by my guys, Dong Bang Shin Ki. This Korean pop band has done more for me and many others like myself more than any of us could ever thank them for with just their music and hearts alone. They are currently caught up in a lawsuit with their company and have been forced to split into 3 & 2. 3 are now singing as JYJ and have had 2 concert tours in the USA. 2 are still singing as Dong Bang Shin Ki. But nothing could ever beat the power of them as FIVE!

To me they shall always and forever be my DB5K. My 5 guys. My 5 heroes.. If you want to read my record of that day and all they have done for me, please visit my tumblr:

One step closer..

I just completed LASIK surgery. Now I can see without the need to wear glasses! It was expensive.. (and a tiny bit scary), but now I'll be safer out on the seas~ No need to worry about loosing my glasses and not being able to see! The only thing to worry about now, vision wise, is loosing my sunglasses or hat and being blinded by the blazing daytime sun or getting salt water in my eyes.

Now, all I need to do is focus on saving the money to buy my boat and study the sailing books I bought until I can return to the states and thus move onto the next step~^^

Preemptive call for a future crew!

IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO HAVE SOME ADVENTURE & SAIL THE WORLD, THIS POST IF FOR YOU!

Although it is extremely early, I felt I should post this call now so that ANYONE & EVERYONE will have a fair chance of getting into my crew. I plan to set sail in about 2 - 3 years, so if you have no experience right now.. you have PLENTY of time in order to gain some. I am looking for 2 - 3 experienced people to join my crew and come with me on my trip around the world. I shall provide the ship, so don't worry about that. All you will need is your experience, personal items, & your sense of adventure. The only thing I will ask is that you chip in a bit to help purchase food.

I will be running a business from the ship, so I will expect each crew member to do their fair share of the work. Whether that be crewing, advertising, helping with the goods for sale, or some other type of work. As long as you help out on the ship, you WILL be given your fair share of the earnings we make. Your share will be based on what you contribute to the business.

If you have your own source of earning income and simply wish to piggyback upon my own business (i.e. you make handmade crafts to sell), that fine~^^ In such a case, I will ask that you pay a small amount of your earnings for rent/travel expenses. Or! If you are open to it, we can be partners in our business and we'll share all our profits equally. The only line I'll draw in that case is, no matter happens, the ship will remain mine.

If we decide to go our separate ways after working together for a while, I promise to return you to whatever port you wish to be taken and I will allow you to keep your profits for that month that way you have the money you need to get back home. This same offer goes to ANY crew member~ If you decide that you wish to leave the crew at any time, simply let me know your reasons and I will drop you off at any port you wish.

Now.. for those of you who are interested in joining me in the future, but you have no experience.. I suggest you start now~ Read up on sailing & techniques, then volunteer to crew on other people's ships in order to gain hands on experience. I will be honest, I am in the same boat as you. I have no experience, but I have already begun studying as much as possible from the books I've recently purchased and from websites. I will also be volunteering to crew as soon as I return to the states in about a year. This is the main reason why it will be 2 - 3 years before I actually set sail.

If you are interested, please contact me and let me know.
Either comment here or contact me through Facebook & we will work things out.

Stay tuned to this blog for future updates~

Forming the plan to be on the right track~

Alright~ What the astrologist had to say will have no negative affects on my life so long as I keep my head and continue working hard for my goals. I have now formulated a basic plan on how to get started in all this. My basic idea:

Start my own business selling my art & providing sailing services from my own sailboat. While running this business, I hope to sail the world and see all there is to see, visit all the places I have longed to visit, & maybe even help others fulfill their dreams along the way~

Step one: Save up money to get the sailboat.. I have already begun and hope to have a substantial amount by the end of my current contract in South Korea which ends on Jan 5th, 2013. If I still need more, then I will find myself a job in Florida, near my family, working with the park or forest service and continue to save while keeping an eye out for my ship-to-be.

Step two: Begin making & stock piling my handmade crafts for sale. I plan on selling handmade stuffed animals, jewelry, clothes, pillows, bags, etc. as well as photography & paintings.

Step three: Get that sailing experience! I want at least 1 full year of experience before I start sailing on my own. I also want to gain my Captain's License and other permits needed to make this whole endeavor as safe as possible.

Step four: Once I find the right boat and I have the money.. BUY MY SHIP! I'm looking to purchase a 35ft - 50ft gaff-rigged ketch with a wood hull and a broad beam for good stability out on the open seas. Once I find my ship I will then make any modifications I wish to make on her before finally setting sail. If I can't find a decent boat within a year or so, then I shall build my own.^^

Step five: Get myself a good crew of about 2 or 3 nakama who wish to sail with me around the world. They need to be experienced in sailing and strong. Whatever dreams they may have themselves is fine~ If I can help them achieve those dreams by having them among my crew, then I will gladly welcome them aboard! ^^

Step six: Practice runs. Once I have the crew, I will need to put them through a few practice runs to make sure we can all work together before making any major treks across oceans. So, I will make a run around the Caribbean, then up the east coast towards New York. I will take about 2 months doing this and if we make it through without too many complaints or complications, then we will prepare for our first voyage across the Atlantic~ ^^

After that~  The sky's the limit! :D These plans may take about 4 yrs to come into fruition and see us sailing across the Atlantic on the first leg of our world tour.. but it will ALL be MORE than worth it! If anyone out there wishes to join me in this, feel free to contact me anytime at Melody.Of.Hope.Always.Forever@gmail.com & we can see about working things out~ ^^

Keep checking back for more posts! :D
